How to self-love and why it matters for your photo shoot

self-love [self-luhv], noun - proper regard for and attention to one's own well-being and happiness

While we often roll with our eyes or frown when we hear the word self-love, I think we underestimate how important and impactful it can be to our lives, careers & businesses. It doesn’t need to be you telling your reflection how awesome you are, though it doesn’t hurt to blow your own trumpet from time to time.

For me it’s as simple as brewing me favourite cup of tea, getting comfortable on the couch and reading a book. but also other little things like have ice cream in bed, start the day with a delicious smoothie, listen to a podcast to feel inspired, try out a new recipe, watch your favourite movie or simply just stay in bed a bit longer (who doesn’t love a lie-in?). These are all small and easy examples that help you practice self-love. There so many other things to do, but basically just book in some me-time and do what makes you happy and feel good.

“Often we are reluctant to promote self-love mostly because we confuse it with selfishness. Since we are humans, we ought to have a healthy love for ourselves; it is from this fount that love flows out to others.” - Mason Olds

Now you probably ask yourself what this has to do with having your photos taken and why it’s important, right? Well, it all really starts with self-love. What makes the difference between a good photo and an amazing one is how you feel about yourself. This has nothing to do with those few extra pounds you may have gained during lockdown, a big nose or that zit that decided to make an appearance. If you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin despite those hang-ups we all have (hello double-chin!) then your photos will reflect that. A happy you makes for great images, it’s as simple as that.

If you want to practice some self-love in preparation for your shoot here are some things that might help.

  • Plan your outfits and go for clothes that make you feel good and comfortable

  • Get a massage the day before or earlier in the day

  • Have your hair and make-up done for you

  • Get a manicure

  • Go to a yoga class in the morning

  • Meditate or do some breathing exercises

  • Plan the day with plenty time to spare, so you don’t feel rushed

  • Prepare a playlist if you want to listen to some tunes during your brand shoot
